Agartala, May 22 (FD) A 30-year-old youth identified as Rubel Mia sustained bullet injuries after Border Security Force (BSF) personnel allegedly opened fire near the Indo-Bangladesh border at Ashabari village under Sonamura subdivision of Sepahijala district.
The injured youth is currently undergoing treatment at GBP Hospital in Agartala, where doctors are reportedly preparing for a major surgical procedure as a bullet remains lodged near his lung.
According to sources from Sonamura, the incident occurred on Wednesday evening when Rubel Mia was allegedly moving towards a mosque located near the barbed-wire fencing along the international border from his residence. During that time, BSF personnel on patrol reportedly opened fire, injuring him.
He was initially rushed to Boxanagar Hospital and was later referred to GBP Hospital owing to the critical nature of his injuries.
Sources said BSF officials reportedly inquired about Rubel Mia’s condition on Thursday morning. According to BSF sources, a patrolling team had noticed suspicious movement near the border area at Ashabari and suspected an organised smuggling attempt.
The BSF personnel allegedly challenged the group and asked them to stop. However, when the group reportedly dispersed rapidly, the patrolling party opened fire as a “last resort”, officials claimed.
The bullet reportedly struck Rubel Mia from behind. Family members and local residents, however, claimed that he had been heading towards the mosque to offer evening prayers at the time of the incident.
No official statement had been issued by the BSF till the filing of this report. FD JK
