Agartala, June 1 (FD) The Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress (TPYC) has announced a phased statewide agitation to demand employment opportunities for youths and stronger government action against drug abuse, trafficking and corruption.
Addressing a press conference, TPYC president Neel Kamal Saha alleged that the state government has failed to address the growing crisis of unemployment despite a large number of vacancies in various departments.
Claiming that more than 50,000 posts remain vacant across government departments, including schools and colleges, Saha said the state administration and its ministers have confined themselves to rhetoric instead of taking concrete steps to fill the vacancies.
“When the Left Front government demitted office in 2018, there were nearly 50,000 vacant posts. Instead of reducing the number, vacancies have increased further. Similarly, the state's debt burden, which was around ₹12,000 crore at that time, has now risen to nearly ₹25,000 crore,” Saha alleged.
He further claimed that unemployment has left many young people frustrated and uncertain about their future. According to him, employment opportunities in Tripura's private sector remain limited due to the state's relatively underdeveloped industrial base, making government recruitment crucial for job seekers.
“The youth of the state are looking for employment and economic security, but the government has remained indifferent to their concerns. At the same time, allegations of corruption have increased significantly,” he said.
The Youth Congress leader also expressed concern over the growing prevalence of drug addiction and narcotics trafficking in the state, alleging that the menace is threatening the future of the younger generation.
Saha said Tripura has emerged as a major hub for drug abuse, peddling and smuggling, and called for intensified efforts by the government and law enforcement agencies to curb the problem.
The press conference, attended by TPYC spokesperson Partha Acharjee, concluded with an announcement that the organisation would soon launch a series of protest programmes across the state focusing on employment generation, eradication of drug abuse and trafficking, and measures to combat corruption.
Saha said the detailed schedule of the agitation would be announced shortly and that the campaign would be carried out in different parts of the state in the coming weeks. FD JK
