Agartala, Aug 20 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has stressed the need to go beyond ensuring women’s safety by expanding opportunities for their education, skill development and economic self-reliance. He also called for stronger social awareness to protect the rights, safety and welfare of women and children across the state.
The Chief Minister made the remarks while chairing consecutive meetings with the Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the Tripura State Commission for Women at Conference Hall No. 1 of the Secretariat.
Dr. Saha emphasised that administrative measures alone cannot bring lasting social change. He said greater awareness is essential to transform the mindset of society and address issues affecting women and children. He advised authorities to regularly organise seminars, workshops and awareness programmes and use creative platforms, including plays, to communicate important social messages effectively.
The Chief Minister also called for identifying problems faced by women and children at the local level and ensuring appropriate solutions and counselling wherever required. He suggested involving prominent citizens, educationists, social workers, intellectuals and women members of self-help groups in awareness initiatives.
During the meeting, special emphasis was placed on preventing child marriage, creating awareness against addiction, strengthening cyber security and conducting continuous awareness programmes on women’s cyber safety.
Dr. Saha also reviewed the situation of children staying in different homes across the state. He stressed that these children should receive proper education, care and opportunities for skill development so they can become self-reliant and establish themselves in society in the future.
Speaking on women’s empowerment, the Chief Minister said women’s security must be accompanied by greater access to education, skill training and economic opportunities. He underlined the importance of skill development programmes in helping women become self-reliant and participate more actively in the mainstream social and economic system.
At the beginning of the meeting, Special Secretary of the Social Welfare and Social Education Department Tapan Kumar Das presented a visual report highlighting various activities of the Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights. The presentation covered school and home inspections, counselling initiatives, child marriage prevention measures and awareness programmes.
Representatives of the Tripura State Commission for Women also briefed the meeting on women’s rights, protection, empowerment and future action plans.
Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy, Tripura State Commission for Women Chairperson Jharna Debbarma, Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights Chairperson Jayanti Debbarma, Chief Minister’s Secretary Kiran Gitte, Secretaries Apurba Roy and P.K. Goel, along with senior officials and departmental representatives, attended the meeting and participated in the discussions. FD SB
