US President Donald Trump has thanked law enforcement authorities and Secret Service agents for their swift action after a shooting near the White House.
In a post on Truth Social, he said the suspect had a violent history and noted the incident occurred shortly after another recent security-related shooting in Washington.
The Secret Service said a man opened fire near a White House security checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, following which officers returned fire. The suspect was hit, taken to the hospital and later died.
A bystander was also injured, though it is not yet clear whether the person was struck by the suspect’s bullets or by gunfire from officers. The suspect has been identified as a 21-year-old man.
President Trump was inside the White House at the time of the incident. This is the third such shooting-related incident reported near the President in recent weeks.
