Agartala, Apr 26 (FD) Elections in the Tripura East Lok Sabha constituency passed off peacefully on Friday, which registered near 80%, turn out.
Sources in the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) here said that 79.55% voters cast their votes till 5 PM in the constituency, which is reserved for the tribals.
“The tribal voters clad in their traditional attire stood in long queue in almost all the booths till the last reports came in. They came from far flung areas to cast their votes. The polling remained largely free, fair and peaceful as adequate security arrangements were done by the Election Commission,” Additional Chief Electoral Officer, Subhasish Bandopadhyay told reporters here.
He said the Election Commission had received some complaints from a few booths, but those were addressed.
As many as 13, 96,761 voters were eligible to exercise their franchise in 1,664 polling centers, of which 7, 02,511 are males, 6, 94,237 females, and 13 are transgender people.
Officials said, for the first time the Brus, who had migrated from Mizoram and were settled in 12 locations in Tripura following a quadruple agreement signed in 2020 had cast their votes. 16,260 voters were eligible for votes.
Altogether nine candidates are in the fray but the main battle was between BJP candidate, Kriti Singh Debbarma and CPI-M candidate Rajendra Reang.
Officials said, it is expected that the percentage of votes will increase as more voters are still standing in queues even after 5 PM. FD JK
