Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan says journalism must uphold truth and integrity

Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan today said that journalism must remain committed to truth, integrity and the highest professional standards. Addressing the 80th Foundation Day celebrations of Organiser Weekly in New Delhi, Mr. Radhakrishnan added that democracy flourishes when the press informs, questions and encourages informed public debate while maintaining credibility. 

Recalling the publication’s journey since its first issue on 3rd July, 1947 just weeks before India’s Independence, Mr. Radhakrishnan said Organiser Weekly has witnessed, documented and participated in the country’s journey from the very beginning. He noted that the publication was founded through the collective support of society rather than by a powerful industrial house or wealthy individual.

Referring to the Emergency, the Vice-President said Organiser Weekly and its sister publication The Motherland became rallying points for those seeking to protect constitutional democracy. He also recalled that former editor K.R. Malkani was among the first media personalities to be arrested after the Emergency was declared, describing it as a testament to the publication’s courage in defending press freedom.
