Veteran CPI-M women leader dies at 92

Agartala, Aug 8 (FD) Veteran CPI(M) leader, prominent women’s rights activist and former MLA Comrade Gouri Bhattacharjee passed away on Saturday at the age of 92 after suffering from age-related ailments.

Her demise marks the end of a long and distinguished chapter in Tripura’s Left movement and the state’s women’s rights movement. A veteran leader of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), Bhattacharjee remained associated with the organisation and its struggles for several decades.

Bhattacharjee was a prominent figure in Tripura’s early Left movement and was among the state’s pioneering women legislators. She was elected from the Barjala Assembly constituency in 1977 and retained the seat in the 1983 Assembly elections as a CPI(M) candidate. She served as an MLA until 1988. Election records confirm her victories from Barjala in both 1977 and 1983.

Her political journey was closely linked to the growth of the Left movement in Tripura and the struggle for women’s rights. Over the decades, she earned the respect of party workers, activists and supporters for her commitment, organisational discipline and dedication to public causes.

Former Tripura Chief Minister and veteran CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar expressed deep grief over Bhattacharjee’s demise. He paid tribute to her long association with the Left movement and recalled her significant contribution to the women’s movement and public life.

CPI(M) Tripura State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury also expressed profound sorrow at her passing. He described Bhattacharjee as a veteran and committed comrade whose life was dedicated to the party, the women’s movement and the struggles of ordinary people.

Party leaders and activists remembered Bhattacharjee as a lifelong fighting comrade whose dedication and commitment continued to inspire generations of activists. Her contribution to Tripura’s Left movement and the advancement of women’s rights is expected to remain an important part of the state’s political history. FD JK
