Unspecified numbers of people sustain injuries after lathi charge by police

Agartala, Jan 14 (FD) Unspecified numbers of people were injured today when police resorted to lathi charge to disperse a crowd, which tried to attack police during the ‘Poush Sankranti’ mela at Melaghar in Sepahijala district.

The incident occurred at Battala mela, where huge crowd gathers and the mela started last evening and continued till today.

The trouble started after a long chatting with a tribal girl, the boy allegedly touched her. A group of people attacked the boy and punched blows on him. Police interfered, but the irate crowd also attacked the police. The crowd also vandalized many shops in the mela.

Police then reinforced them and resort to mild lathi charge to bring the crowd under control.

The injured were given first-aids at the Melaghar hospital. FD JK
