Agartala, Feb 12 (FD) Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal today said his ministry was working to provide global waterway connectivity to Tripura through the Bay of Bengal in Bangladesh for carriage of its goods in different parts like Kolkata, Paradip, and Vishakhapatanam.
“Our ministry is trying a lot for this global connect through the river Gomati, which also flows through Bangladesh and connects with the Bay of Bengal”, he said.
The river Gomati falls into Meghna which is connected with the Bay of Bengal.
“Once the global connectivity is established then goods from Tripura can go to Kolkata, Paradip and Vishakhapatnam and goods also can come to this north eastern state from those lands. Once established it would provide cheaper mode of transportation”, he added.
Earlier, a permanent jetty was setup at Sonamura subdivision in Sepahijala district bordering Comilla district of Bangladesh.
He also said that India will become the third largest economy in the world by 2029 as the policies and programmes under the leadership of the Prime Minister raised socio-economic standard of people.
He said good governance has enabled people to live with dignity.
Sonowal also pointed out that states like Tripura are grasping the global market and also having a space in the global market through exports of pineapple and other horticultural produce.
“With a big push given to the maritime sector in the budget, we are now trying for development of more waterways linkages in the country and outside the country. FD JK
