UN Human Rights Chief raises red alert over the risk of possible atrocity crimes in Sudan’s El-Obeid

The United Nations Human Rights Chief Rights Volker Turk has raised a red alert over the risk of possible atrocity crimes in and around Sudan’s strategic city of El-Obeid.

Addressing the Human Rights Council in Geneva today, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk urged world leaders to take immediate steps to prevent further bloodshed. He warned that another human rights catastrophe is unfolding as civilians continue to face relentless drone strikes and severe shortages of food, water, fuel and healthcare.

According to reports, Sudan’s civil war, which began in April 2023 between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has claimed at least 59 thousand lives and displaced around 13 million people. The UN has expressed concern over renewed RSF offensives and growing threats to civilians in El-Obeid.
