Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy calls for stronger air defence after Russian strikes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy today called for the protection of Ukraine’s skies following the overnight Russian strikes at various parts of the country. 30 people were reportedly killed and around 100 were injured in these strikes.

In a social media post, the Ukrainian president shared visuals of the aftermath of the Russian strikes in the capital city of Kyiv as the emergency and rescue operations are underway. He stated that while 30 people have been reported dead so far, 10 people are still missing. Noting the attack on civilian infrastructure, Mr Zelenskyy accused Russia of committing a war crime. 

Russia’s Defence Ministry said in a statement that the bombardment was in response to Ukraine’s long-range strikes on its civilian infrastructure. Ukraine’s large-scale attacks on Russia, described by President Zelenskyy as a 40-day blitz, have primarily targeted oil refineries, triggering a fuel crisis in Russia more than four years after the war between Kyiv and Moscow began.
