Agartala, May 23 (FD) A series of tragic incidents involving lightning strike and electrocution have claimed multiple lives in different parts of Tripura over the past twenty-four hours, plunging several families and local communities into deep mourning.
In the most heart-rending incident, two siblings lost their lives after being struck by lightning at Nabinchhara area under Pecharthal subdivision on Saturday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Sumanta Chakma (30) and Mina Chakma (27).
According to local sources, the tragic incident occurred during sudden adverse weather conditions when a powerful lightning strike hit the area. The brother and sister reportedly died on the spot, leaving family members, relatives and residents of the locality devastated.
The untimely deaths triggered an atmosphere of grief throughout the region. Villagers and neighbours rushed to the spot immediately after the incident and expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the two young siblings. Residents described them as humble and well-known individuals whose deaths have left a deep emotional impact on the community.
Family members were reportedly inconsolable following the tragedy. The local administration has taken note of the incident and necessary inquiries are underway. Officials have also appealed to people to remain alert during thunderstorms and lightning activity as the monsoon and pre-monsoon season continue to bring unpredictable weather conditions across the northeastern region.
In another tragic incident reported from Kumarghat subdivision, Narayan De (58), a poor rubber tapper from Krishna Nagar under Fatikroy assembly constituency, died after being struck by lightning while working in a rubber plantation on Saturday afternoon. Witnesses said a sudden rainstorm accompanied by intense lightning struck the area around 1 pm, causing Narayan De to collapse instantly.
Fire Brigade personnel from Kanchanbari rushed him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. He is survived by his elderly mother and wife.
Meanwhile, in a separate electrocution incident at Rajnagar village under Poangbari block in Sabroom subdivision, Tamal Nama (30) died while repairing an electric board inside the worship room of his house. He was immediately taken to Nalua Primary Hospital but was declared brought dead by doctors.
Tamal Nama, the sole breadwinner of his family, is survived by his wife, two children and aged mother. His sudden death has left the entire village grief-stricken, with concerns growing over the future of his helpless family.
The incidents have once again highlighted the increasing risks posed by lightning strikes and electrical accidents during severe weather conditions in Tripura. FD SB
