Agartala, May 22 (FD) Despite repeated anti-infiltration measures and heightened border vigilance, incidents of illegal cross-border entry from Bangladesh into Tripura continue to be reported from different sectors along the porous international border.
In the latest incident, two Bangladeshi women were apprehended along with an Indian driver in the Belonia subdivision of South Tripura district after allegedly entering Indian territory illegally through the Raj Nagar border area.
The detained women later identified themselves as Reshma Begum (42) and Ayesha Begum (26). According to sources, the duo allegedly crossed the barbed-wire fencing and entered Indian territory through the Raj Nagar sector on Thursday.
After entering Tripura, they were reportedly travelling towards Belonia in a Maruti vehicle bearing registration number TR-08-B-0303, driven by one Prasenjit Das, who was allegedly in contact with the two women prior to their arrival.
Sources from Belonia said a team from PR Bari Police Station intercepted the vehicle during routine checking and detained all three individuals.
During initial interrogation at the police station, the two women allegedly attempted to conceal their identities but later admitted that they had entered India from Bangladesh for medical treatment. They subsequently disclosed their names and other details to investigators.
Police later produced the two women before a court and secured their remand to judicial custody after registering cases under relevant provisions of the Foreigners Act and illegal immigration laws.
However, the handling of the case triggered controversy after the driver, Prasenjit Das, was reportedly not produced before the court and was later released from PR Bari Police Station on a personal bond, raising questions in local circles regarding the police action. FD JK
