Agartala, June 27 (FD) Tripura Police on Saturday arrested two alleged gang members, Aman Deb and Rahul Debnath, from the Office Tilla area of Bishalgarh subdivision after weeks of surveillance. The duo had been absconding in connection with the firing incident at the residence of a contractor and other criminal activities.
Police said the accused were close associates of Ranabir Debnath, the prime accused in the firing case and several other criminal offences. Ranabir had surrendered before the police last month, while Aman and Rahul had remained on the run to evade arrest.
According to police sources, plainclothes personnel had been maintaining round-the-clock surveillance on the suspects' residences for several days. Acting on specific information that the duo had returned home late on Friday night, a police team surrounded the house early on Saturday morning.
The accused allegedly attempted to flee after noticing the police presence but were chased, overpowered and taken into custody.
Police sources said Aman Deb and Rahul Debnath are allegedly involved in multiple criminal cases, including illegal land encroachment, extortion from contractors and businessmen, and violent assaults.
Both accused are expected to be produced before the Bishalgarh court, where police will seek their remand for custodial interrogation.
Investigators said efforts are underway to file a comprehensive charge sheet against the two accused along with Ranabir Debnath as the investigation progresses. FD JK
