Agartala, July 4 (FD) The West District Committee of the Tripura Working Journalists' Association (TWJA) on Saturday observed the association's foundation day by organising a voluntary blood donation camp at the Agartala Press Club, reaffirming its commitment to social service alongside professional journalism.
The programme, which commenced at 10 a.m., was inaugurated by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha in the presence of Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, veteran editor of Syandan Patrika Subal Kumar Dey and senior members of the journalistic fraternity.
Around 40 journalists associated with the TWJA donated blood during the camp. A team of doctors, technicians and specialists from the Blood Bank of Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital collected the donated blood for use by patients in need.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Dr. Saha lauded the initiative, describing voluntary blood donation as a vital humanitarian service. He said such programmes play an important role in addressing periodic shortages of blood in hospitals and healthcare institutions across the state.
"Hospitals and health centres often face shortages of blood, creating difficulties for patients who require urgent transfusions. Voluntary blood donation is a life-saving initiative, and I congratulate the TWJA for organising this camp. I hope the association will continue to undertake such constructive social activities in the future," the Chief Minister said.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury also appreciated the efforts of the TWJA and the Agartala Press Club, stating that such initiatives significantly strengthen the state's healthcare support system while encouraging greater public participation in voluntary blood donation.
TWJA president and senior journalist Bijay Paul thanked the Chief Minister and the minister for attending the programme and extending their support. He said the association has always remained conscious of its social responsibilities in addition to safeguarding the interests of journalists.
Paul noted that the TWJA had organised similar blood donation camps in the past and would continue to undertake such welfare-oriented programmes in the years ahead as part of its commitment to serving society.
The event concluded successfully with enthusiastic participation from journalists and members of the media fraternity. FD JK
