Agartala, Apr 10 (FD) The Office of the Election Commissioner for District Council in Tripura has announced comprehensive preparations for the General Election to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) 2026, emphasizing its commitment to conducting a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful electoral process.
According to official sources, the election machinery has achieved several critical milestones ahead of polling day, scheduled for April 12, 2026. Authorities have focused on strengthening administrative efficiency, security arrangements, and voter participation to uphold democratic values across the state.
One of the major developments includes the finalization of contesting candidates. Following the withdrawal of nominations on March 28, 2026, a total of 173 candidates have been confirmed to contest the elections. This marks a significant phase in the electoral process, setting the stage for a competitive democratic exercise.
To ensure a secure environment, extensive law and order measures have been implemented by police authorities. Security forces have been directed to maintain strict vigilance during the campaign period and on polling day. Instructions have also been issued to Returning Officers to coordinate with civil and police sector officers, ensuring polling personnel reach their assigned stations without disruption.
In a crucial logistical step, around 3,500 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have been procured from the Madhya Pradesh State Election Commission. These machines have successfully undergone First Level Checking (FLC) by District Election Officers and have been commissioned for use. Currently, all EVMs are securely stored in designated strong rooms under tight security surveillance, ready for deployment on polling day.
The Commission has also reported significant success in postal ballot facilitation. With an impressive 97 percent casting rate, the initiative reflects strong participation among eligible voters. The remaining ballots have been dispatched through postal services to ensure maximum inclusion.
To reinforce security further, 24 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed across the state. These forces will play a critical role in maintaining peace before, during, and after the elections. In addition, regular area domination exercises and flag marches are being conducted by district authorities to build voter confidence and deter any potential disturbances.
Legal measures have also been enforced to maintain public order. Restrictions under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Representation of the People Act, 1951 are in effect from April 10 evening until April 13 morning. These measures are aimed at preventing unlawful activities and ensuring smooth conduct of the elections.
A strict 48-hour silence period has also been enforced ahead of polling. During this time, all forms of election campaigning, including advertisements, debates, and opinion polls, are prohibited across television, radio, print, and digital platforms. The Commission has warned that any violation of these guidelines will invite strict legal action.
The movement of polling personnel is scheduled to begin on April 11 under adequate security arrangements, with deployment expected to be completed by the same evening. Authorities have ensured that all polling stations are equipped with essential facilities for both voters and election staff.
To facilitate voter identification, the Commission has approved multiple documents apart from the Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC), including Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, passport, driving license, and government-issued identity cards, among others.
Transparency remains a key focus area, with videography mandated at every critical stage of the election process, including nomination filing, scrutiny, EVM handling, and strong room operations. This initiative aims to enhance accountability and public trust in the electoral system.
Preparations for vote counting, scheduled on April 17, 2026, have also been finalized. Counting personnel will undergo specialized training, and engineers from ECIL will be present at counting centers to handle any technical issues related to EVMs.
Additionally, the central exchange of postal ballots will take place at Shishu Bihar H.S. School in Agartala on April 14, under strict security arrangements.
The Commission has also conducted extensive training programs for election officials, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle responsibilities efficiently. Officials highlighted that media organizations and stakeholders play a crucial role in maintaining transparency and public awareness, urging continued cooperation.
With all systems in place, Tripura stands prepared for a peaceful and credible electoral exercise, reflecting the strength of democratic institutions and citizen participation.
