Agartala, Aug 31 (FD) The long-pending elections to the 587 Village Committees (VCs) under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) will finally be held on September 28, with the State Election Commission (SEC) announcing the detailed election schedule on Monday.
Addressing an interactive session with the media, State Election Commissioner Pradip Chakraborty said polling would be conducted from 7 am to 4 pm through ballot papers, with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) not being used for the elections.
October 3 has been reserved for re-polling, if required, while the counting of votes will begin at 8 am on October 5 and continue until its completion. The entire election process is scheduled to conclude by October 8.
According to the Election Commission, a total of 9, 61,987 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the Village Committee elections. The electorate includes around 4.82 lakh male voters, 4.80 lakh female voters and six transgender voters.
Polling will be conducted at 1,550 polling stations across the ADC areas. Dhalai district has the highest number of polling stations at 289, while Unakoti district has the lowest number at 92.
The elections will be held across 52 of the state’s 58 development blocks. To ensure the smooth conduct of the polls, the Commission has appointed 251 Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and 73 sector officers.
The State Election Commissioner said Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) would be accepted as the primary proof of identity for voters. However, the Commission has also made provisions for voters to establish their identity through other approved documents.
Counting of ballot papers will primarily be conducted at block headquarters, although the Election Commission may notify other designated venues or halls depending on requirements.
Chakraborty said the official notification for the elections would be issued on September 1, following which the nomination process would also begin. The last date for filing nominations is September 8. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on September 9, while candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations until September 11.
“We have already held meetings with security agencies to ensure safe and smooth elections and have also interacted with representatives of political parties. An important meeting with political parties was held on August 27, which was fruitful, and the parties assured their cooperation,” Chakraborty said.
He added that meetings had also been held with District Election Officers and Returning Officers, and adequate security arrangements would be put in place for the polls. FD JK
