Agartala, Sept 22 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Monday that the state will soon establish special green corridors to ensure the rapid, unimpeded movement of emergency ambulances through traffic congestion.
Speaking on the initiative, Saha noted that a series of strategic meetings have already been conducted to streamline ambulance transit, particularly for critical patients arriving from outside the state capital.
"We will set up a green corridor so that patients do not get stuck in traffic jams," the Chief Minister stated, emphasizing that the system will prevent life-threatening delays during medical emergencies.
Driving Down Out-of-State Medical Referrals
The announcement underscores the state government’s broader campaign to fortify Tripura's healthcare infrastructure and minimize the need for citizens to seek advanced treatment elsewhere.
Dr. Saha affirmed that the administration is systematically upgrading major referral hospitals with cutting-edge medical facilities. As a result, out-of-state referrals have already seen a significant decline. The government's ultimate objective, he added, is to reduce these referrals to zero by continuously expanding specialized local healthcare. Key priorities include infrastructure modernization, accelerated response times, and stringent hospital cleanliness.
New ICU and CSSD Facilities Launched at GB Hospital
The Chief Minister shared these updates during the inauguration of a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) at the Super Specialty Block of the Government Medical College and GBP Hospital in Agartala.
The newly launched ICU features an 18-bed capacity, equally divided with nine beds each for male and female patients. Meanwhile, the state-of-the-art CSSD is set to drastically improve sterilization protocols and infection control at the prominent referral institution. To complement these hardware upgrades, Dr. Saha highlighted that the government is investing heavily in advanced training for doctors and medical staff to optimize the use of these modern systems.
Expanding Digital Healthcare
Technology remains a cornerstone of the state's healthcare roadmap. Dr. Saha pointed out that digital healthcare services have already been successfully deployed across several regional hospitals. Moving forward, the government aims to blend robust physical infrastructure, specialized personnel, and technology-driven solutions to comprehensively elevate patient care.
AGMC Medical Seats Bumped to 250
In a major boost to regional medical education, the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has secured approval for 100 additional MBBS seats. This expands the institution's annual intake from 150 to 250 seats. The expansion will take effect from the 2026–27 academic session, opening up substantial new opportunities for aspiring medical students across Tripura and the wider Northeast region. FD JK
