Agartala, June 2 (FD) In a major boost to higher education in Tripura, the state government has secured approval from the Union Ministry of Education for the establishment of two new universities—one exclusively for women and another dedicated to technical and engineering education.
According to official sources, the proposed Women's University will be developed on the existing campus of the State Women's College in Agartala, while the Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT) at Narsingarh will be upgraded into a full-fledged Technical University. A gazette notification for the creation of the two institutions has already been issued.
To facilitate the transition, the existing infrastructure of both institutions will be significantly expanded, including the construction of additional hostel facilities and academic infrastructure before the universities become fully operational.
Sources said the Government of India will provide financial support for the establishment and development of the two universities. The process of appointing key administrative officials, including Vice-Chancellors and Registrars, is expected to begin shortly.
In the subsequent phase, recruitment will be undertaken for various academic and administrative positions, including Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, Assistant Registrars, Deputy Registrars and Joint Registrars. Qualified candidates from Tripura possessing credentials such as NET and SLET certificates are expected to benefit from the recruitment drive, while existing faculty members will have opportunities for career advancement through promotions.
The proposed Technical University at Narsingarh will offer advanced programmes in engineering and technology, creating new avenues for higher learning and research in technical disciplines within the state.
Sources further indicated that postgraduate programmes in both universities are likely to commence from the next financial year, substantially expanding access to higher education for students across Tripura.
At the Women's University, Master's degree courses are expected to be introduced initially in Arts, Science and Commerce streams. In a phased manner, the institution will also launch professional and interdisciplinary programmes, including BBA, BCA, MCA, LLB, LLM, Mass Communication, Public Relations, Integrated Master's Programmes, Tourism Studies and Library Science.
The establishment of the two universities is being viewed as a significant step towards strengthening Tripura's higher education ecosystem, enhancing academic opportunities, and creating new employment prospects in the education sector. FD JK
