Agartala, Aug 28 (FD) The Tripura government is working steadily to achieve self-sufficiency in milk, meat and egg production while strengthening veterinary infrastructure and expanding livelihood opportunities in the animal husbandry sector, Animal Resource Development Minister Sudhangshu Das informed the Tripura Legislative Assembly.
In a written reply to a question from MLA Swapna Das Pal, the minister said that during the past three years, a total of 51 animal hospitals and primary animal healthcare centres across the state have been renovated. In addition, five primary animal healthcare centres have been upgraded into veterinary dispensaries.
Das said the Animal Resource Development Department has drawn up several plans to further strengthen infrastructure and improve animal healthcare services. Under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund, the department plans to establish sub-centres, veterinary dispensaries and animal hospitals.
With financial assistance from the North Eastern Council, plans are also being pursued for the establishment of farmer training centres, development and setting up of farms, construction of hospitals, slaughterhouses and centres for animal-based products.
The minister further said that under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment scheme, the department is planning to strengthen biosecurity measures and establish critical care units, feed analytic laboratories, blood banks for animals and government residential facilities.
Responding to another written question from MLA Jitendra Majumder, Das said the department was working relentlessly to make Tripura self-reliant in the production of milk, meat and eggs. A five-year roadmap is being prepared with the twin objectives of strengthening the rural economy and creating employment opportunities for unemployed youth.
In the dairy sector, Tripura is currently the second-largest milk-producing state in the Northeast in terms of per capita availability, the minister said. To achieve self-sufficiency, the government is focusing on artificial insemination, nutritional security for newborn calves, improved treatment and disease prevention, cattle insurance and modernisation of milk processing infrastructure.
Das said Tripura has already achieved self-sufficiency in meat production and ranks second among Northeastern states in per capita meat availability. Over the next five years, the state plans to increase production through artificial insemination of pigs, distribution of pigs and goats under various schemes, insurance coverage, World Bank-supported projects and doorstep veterinary services for farmers.
In the egg sector, Tripura currently ranks first in the Northeast in per capita availability, according to the minister. The government is distributing improved breeds of ducks and poultry, upgrading government farms, constructing brooder houses and facilitating bank-based financial assistance for large private commercial farms.
The Animal Resource Development Department will continue its efforts over the next five years to achieve complete self-sufficiency in egg production and explore opportunities for exports, Das added. FD SB
