Agartala, June 30 (FD) Tripura Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha on Tuesday stressed the importance of continuous vigilance, robust security mechanisms and capacity building to safeguard critical digital assets as the state steps up efforts to strengthen its cyber security framework in the face of growing cyber threats.
Addressing a workshop on "Strengthening Cyber Security Frameworks for State Data" at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala, Sinha said the rapid expansion of e-governance initiatives and digital public infrastructure has led to the generation and processing of enormous volumes of institutional and sensitive government data.
"As digital governance expands, institutional data security and cyber security have become key priorities. We must ensure continuous vigilance, strong security mechanisms and sustained capacity building to protect critical digital assets," he said.
Describing cyber security as a governance imperative rather than merely a technological issue, the Chief Secretary called for coordinated action across government departments, periodic risk assessments, modernisation of legacy systems and the adoption of effective data protection measures.
Expressing confidence in the deliberations, Sinha said the workshop would generate actionable recommendations to enhance Tripura's cyber resilience and contribute to the development of a robust national framework for securing government data.
Highlighting the growing menace of cybercrime, Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar said cyber fraudsters have cheated people in Tripura of nearly ₹83 crore over the past eight years.
He said prompt reporting by victims enabled authorities to freeze ₹15.43 crore, while ₹1.50 crore has been successfully refunded to affected individuals.
Dhankar observed that government institutions and critical digital infrastructure have increasingly become targets of cybercriminals and assured that law enforcement agencies would further strengthen cybercrime prevention and enforcement based on the recommendations emerging from the workshop.
Director of Information Technology Jeya Ragul Geshan presented an overview of the state's cyber security ecosystem, outlining the initiatives undertaken to improve the resilience of government ICT infrastructure.
He said the state has established the Tripura Security Operations Centre (TSOC) for round-the-clock monitoring and protection of critical government digital assets. The implementation of the Tripura Cyber Security Policy has also significantly strengthened the state's digital security architecture, he added
