Agartala, Mar 6 (FD) A state-level Seminar cum Sensitization Programme on Animal Welfare Laws and Policies was held at Pragna Bhawan to raise awareness and enhance animal welfare efforts. Organized by the Tripura Veterinary Doctors Association in collaboration with the Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD), the event gathered policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to discuss legal frameworks and initiatives for protecting animals.
Dairy Projects and Cow Shelters Proposed
Minister for Animal Resources Development Sudhangshu Das announced that a proposal has been sent to the central government to establish dairy projects in all districts to boost milk production. Additionally, eight cow shelters will be set up across the state to accommodate rescued cattle from illegal smuggling operations.
Recognizing Excellence in Animal Welfare
The Gomati Animal Welfare Society was honored for its outstanding contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, Kailashahar’s Assistant Director of ARDD, Tapan Roy, was posthumously recognized for his dedication to animal welfare. The award was accepted by Rahul Dhar Purkayastha.
Several veterinary officials were also awarded for their exceptional efforts during last year’s floods. Among the recipients were:
- Dr. Subir Das, Deputy Director of South District, and his team
- Dr. Billo Debbarma, Deputy Director of Gomati District, and his team
- Dr. Amal Majumdar, Deputy Director of Sepahijala District, and his team
Minister Sudhangshu Das presented certificates and mementos to the awardees in recognition of their dedicated service.
Legal Framework and Public Involvement
During his speech, Minister Das emphasized the need for compassion and responsibility towards animals and reaffirmed that the Tripura Animal Welfare Board is efficiently functioning. He highlighted the state’s free vaccination program for livestock and referenced the Animal Welfare Board of India, which was established in 1964 to ensure compliance with animal protection laws.
Deepak Majumdar, Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation and MLA, commended ARDD’s efforts and stressed the need for public participation in animal welfare. He emphasized that while laws help regulate animal protection, fostering compassion is equally crucial.
Tripura’s Secretary for Animal Resources Development, Deepa D. Nair, elaborated on legal provisions for animal welfare and encouraged citizens to actively participate in safeguarding animal rights.
Expert Panel Discusses Animal Welfare Laws
A technical session featuring experts provided insights into animal welfare policies and regulations. Notable speakers included:
- Dr. Arunashish Goswami, Professor at West Bengal Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Extension Education Department
- Jayakrishnan V.K., District Forest Officer of West Tripura
- Dr. Biswajit Das, Legal Officer of ARDD
A documentary showcasing Tripura’s animal welfare initiatives and development projects was also presented.
Collaborative Efforts for Animal Protection
The event was attended by dignitaries including Sujan Sen, Assistant Sabhadhipati of Gomati Zilla Parishad, Dr. Priyabrata Nath, President of the Tripura Veterinary Doctors Association, and Dr. Sujit Saha, General Secretary of the association.
