Agartala, July 29 (FD) In a gesture of goodwill and strengthening cross-border ties, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday sent a consignment of the state's indigenous Kew variety pineapples to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, officials said.
A total of 100 packets containing more than 600 freshly harvested pineapples were dispatched to Dhaka through the Akhaura Integrated Checkpost near Agartala.
The initiative comes in response to the recent gift of Haribhanga mangoes sent by the Bangladesh Prime Minister to Chief Minister Manik Saha.
Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department Secretary Apurba Kumar Roy said the consignment was intended not only as a reciprocal gesture but also to promote Tripura’s renowned pineapples among consumers in the neighbouring country.
“In response to the Bangladesh Prime Minister’s gift of delicious Haribhanga mangoes to our Chief Minister, we have sent 100 packets of Kew variety pineapples, containing over 600 fruits, to the Prime Minister and the people of Bangladesh through the Akhaura Integrated Checkpost,” Roy said.
He added that the initiative aims to enhance the popularity of Tripura’s pineapples in Bangladesh and expand the market for the state's horticultural produce.
“We are sending the pineapples to the people of Bangladesh to taste our indigenous fruits. The state already exports pineapples to several foreign countries, and we hope our fruit will gain wider recognition in the neighbouring nation as well,” Roy said.
Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department Director P.B. Jamatia said the consignment comprised freshly harvested Kew variety pineapples, as the harvesting season for the premium Queen variety had already concluded.
“The Queen variety of pineapples grown in the state is famous for its tastes, but we could not send those as they are not available this season. We have sent the Kew variety, which is considered the second-best variety cultivated in the state,” Jamatia said.
Tripura is one of India's leading pineapple-producing states, with its Queen and Kew varieties widely appreciated for their sweetness and quality. The latest exchange of agricultural produce is seen as a symbolic step towards fostering goodwill and strengthening people-to-people ties between Tripura and Bangladesh. FD JK
