Agartala, May 19 (FD) The wild animal lovers and the officials at Tripura’s Sepahijala sanctuary are cheerful after the birth of three tiger cubs for the first time in the history of the zoo.
“The wild animal lovers and staffs are cheerful as a tigress gave birth to three tiger cubs last week. This zoo was set up in the sanctuary 53 years ago, but for the first time witnessed the birth of cubs from a tigress”, the Director of the wildlife sanctuary, Biswajit Das said.
He said the male tiger was separated from the enclosure to avoid any risk as there is instance of killing babies by tigers.
Das said, “The mother tigress and her cubs are quiet fit and are being served with nutritious foods like enough of fresh meats, soups and other foods so that the tigress can grow enough milk for the cubs. Many CCTVs were installed in around the enclosure for twenty four hours monitoring. All possible measures have been taken to keep the tigress and her cubs healthy”.
With the birth of the three cubs, the total number of the big cats now rose to five, he said adding a pair of tigers were exchanged with West Bengal in February last year.
Das said that the tourists or the wildlife lovers are being allowed to see the new born cubs as a part of precautionary measures.
Giving his reaction to the birth of the cubs, the state Minister for Forest, Environment and Science and Technology, Animesh Debbarma said, “The zoo came into being in the year 1972, but for the first time witnessed that a tigress gave birth to new cubs. It would also provide more information about tiger conservation in enclosure”.
The minister would soon visit the zoo to oversee if all facilities are being provided to the tigress and her cubs.
“This sanctuary is also a prominent tourist spot and our department is trying to make the zoo a world class conservation hub. We want more supports from the Zoo Authority of India and the central government to further develops it”, the Minister said.
Nestled in the Sepahijal District, the wild life sanctuary covers 18.5 square KM areas and is about 28 KM from here. In the last year over 1.70 lakh tourists visited the sanctuary. FD JK
