Agartala, Jan 01 (FD) Tripura Revenue Minister and chief of Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), an ally of ruling BJP Narendra Chandra Debbarma died on Sunday at G B Pant hospital here.
He was 84 and is survived by his wife, four sons and three daughters. Debbarma was suffering from multiple ailments including old-age, chronic diabetes and cardiac problems.
He breathed his last at 2.45 pm at the hospital.
Debbarma held the post of the Station Director of the All India Radio for many years before joining politics and formed IPFT in 2009 and raised the demand for separate Tipraland by carbing out the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which constitute two third of the state territory and home to tribals, who form one third of the state population.
He played a very significant role in installing the BJP-IPFT alliance government in the state in March 2018 and ended the 25-year old Marxist government.
Tripura Governor Satyadeo Narain Arya extended his condolences to the bereaved family in a message.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha rushed to Debbarma’s residence and paid floral tribute to the body and condoled his death to the bereaved family.
In a social media post he wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing away of senior member in the state cabinet Shri N.C. Debbarma today. My condolences to the bereaved family. May the departed soul rest in peace. Om Santi!,”
Senior BJP leader and Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Pratima Bhoumik also visited the hospital and extended her condolences.
Former Chief Minister of the state and Rajya Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb in a social media post extended his condolences to the bereaved family.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing away of Narendra Chandra Devavarma, member of the state cabinet and veteran politician, senior leader of our government partner IPFT. I pray to God for his departed soul. Om Santi!” he wrote.
Tipra Motha Supremo Pradyut Kishore Debbarma extending his condolences to Debbarma’s family in a social media post wrote, “I am deeply anguished to hear about the demise of senior leader and Minister Shri. NC Debbarma. He was a leading voice of indigenous rights in the state of Tripura and he shall always be remembered for his contribution to the society. My condolences to his family, friends and followers.” FD PD JK
