Tripura residents face power tariff shock amidst rising costs

Agartala, Sept 23 (FD) In the midst of a digital race among several states to provide pre-election freebies, Tripura's populace is grappling with an unwelcome surprise. As of October 1 this year, they will be burdened with significantly higher power tariffs, in stark contrast to the relief offered by other states. The Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission (TERC) has given its approval to these rate hikes.
Under the revised tariff structure, domestic consumers will see their rates rise from the current Rs 4.84 per unit to Rs 5.08 per unit. The fixed charge, presently at Rs 20.00 per unit, will increase to Rs 30.00. Those consuming between 51 and 150 units will face a jump from Rs 5.98 per unit to Rs 6.40, coupled with a fixed charge increase from Rs 40.00 to Rs 45.00. For those using 151-300 units, rates will increase from Rs 6.16 per unit to Rs 6.59, with the fixed charge rising from Rs 50.00 to Rs 55.00. Lastly, consumption of over 300 units, which was charged at Rs 7.20 per unit, will now cost Rs 7.70 per unit, with the fixed charge increasing to Rs 55.00.
The steep hike has drawn sharp criticism from the public, who blame it on transmission losses, rampant power pilferage, and the failure of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) to collect dues from government departments. They perceive it as an attempt by the government to shift the weight of TSECL's shortcomings onto the people during a period of soaring inflation.
