Agartala, May 21 (FD) In a major achievement for the healthcare sector, Tripura has registered a significant decline in the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), reflecting steady progress in maternal and child healthcare services across the state.
According to the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) Bulletin 2024 released by the Registrar General of India in May 2026, Tripura’s IMR has dropped to 12, which is substantially lower than the national average of 24.
The latest figures indicate consistent improvement in the state’s health indicators over the past three years. Tripura’s IMR declined from 17 in 2022 to 15 in 2023 and further to 12 in 2024. In contrast, the all-India IMR stood at 26 in 2022, 25 in 2023 and 24 in 2024.
The achievement is being viewed as a significant milestone in the state’s public health system, particularly in the areas of neonatal and maternal healthcare. Health officials attributed the improvement to sustained strengthening of institutional healthcare services and extensive community-based interventions.
Key initiatives that contributed to the decline include the expansion and strengthening of Special Newborn Care Units (SNCUs) and Newborn Stabilization Units (NBSUs), improved institutional delivery services in both urban and rural areas, wider immunization coverage, enhanced antenatal and maternal healthcare services, and improved monitoring and emergency referral mechanisms for mothers and newborns.
Healthcare experts also highlighted the role of awareness campaigns and grassroots-level interventions in ensuring timely healthcare access for pregnant women and infants across remote regions of the state.
Reacting to the achievement, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed satisfaction over the state’s progress in healthcare delivery. In a message shared on his Facebook account, Dr. Saha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda for their continued support in strengthening healthcare infrastructure and services in Tripura.
The Chief Minister reiterated the state government’s commitment to further improving healthcare facilities and ensuring quality medical services for mothers and children, including those living in remote and underserved areas. FD JK
