Agartala, Aug 31 (FD) Tripura has provided drinking water connections through pipelines to 6,49,500 families, covering 86.50 percent of the total households across the state, Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha informed the Assembly on Monday.
The Chief Minister made the statement while replying to a calling-attention notice on “ensuring drinking water supply everywhere in hilly/remote areas”, raised by MLAs Shailendra Chandra Nath and Ramu Das.
According to the Chief Minister, Tripura has a total of 7,50,849 families across 606 Gram Panchayats and 587 Village Councils. As of August 26, piped drinking water connections had reached 6,49,500 families, while 13.50 percent of families are yet to receive assured drinking water connections.
Saha said the state government is implementing several projects to achieve universal coverage. These include 3,264 deep tube wells, 703 stand-post deep tube wells, three surface water treatment plants, 1,498 iron removal plants and 233 innovative projects. The ongoing works are targeted for completion by 2028.
He said rural drinking water is being supplied through multiple sources, including deep tube wells, water treatment plants and innovative schemes. In scattered and remote hilly areas where conventional tube wells cannot be installed because of limited water sources, projects based on springs, streams and reservoirs are being developed.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the progress made since the launch of the Jal Jeevan Mission on August 15, 2019. Before the mission began, only 3.26 percent of rural households in Tripura had door-to-door piped drinking water connections.
In the ADC areas, out of 3,27,193 families, 2,70,714 families have received piped drinking water connections, representing 82.74 percent coverage as of August 26.
To strengthen local-level maintenance, the government has designated 1,262 people as “Jal Jal Mitra” across Gram Panchayats and Village Committees. So far, 777 people have received multi-skill training for rural water supply and maintenance, while the remaining 485 are expected to be trained during the 2026-27 financial year.
The Chief Minister further said the extended Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 has received a timeline extension from the Centre until December 2028 to ensure coverage of all rural families.
For 2026-27, Tripura has been allocated Rs 564.76 crore under the programme, including Rs 508.10 crore from the Centre and Rs 56.46 crore from the state government. The first installment of Rs 122.39 crore has already been sanctioned, while the second installment is expected by the last week of September.
The government said efforts would continue to ensure reliable drinking water access, particularly for people living in remote and hilly areas of Tripura. FD SB
