Tripura police warns of stern actions against rumor mongering

Agartala, July 25 (FD) Tripura Police has cautioned the mischievous people involved in ethnic rumor-mongering on social media against the tribals.
The Tripura Police on Wednesday issued a stern warning against rumor-mongering after rumors spread that some miscreants asked tribals to leave big towns of the state. The police said those spreading misinformation will be dealt with firm hand.
The issue surfaced on social media just days after tension subsided at Gandatwisa in Tripura’s Dhalai district, where around 40 houses, 30 shops and a few vehicles were damaged on July 12. The violence had spread following tension over the death of tribal youth Parameshwar Reang, who was earlier injured in a clash with local youths on July 7.
On the issue, West Tripura District Police took to social media and wrote, “There is a message being circulated in social media by some miscreants urging all tribals to leave Agartala or any other big town of the state before 26th July, this message is absolutely baseless, and there is no need to panic. The situation is totally under control and enough force is deployed to tackle any kind of situation. Strict legal action will be taken against persons spreading such message, please refrain from spreading false rumors”.
In a separate message, the state police said “some mischievous elements through false social media posts are trying to disturb peace in the state by spreading baseless rumors” and appealed to people not to pay heed to such rumors. The police have also urged people to report to the nearest police station or dial 112 or 100 if they come across any such post on social media.
The tribals constitute 30% of the state’s estimated 40 lakh populations. FD JK
