Agartala, Sept 15 (FD) Tripura Police have summoned two leaders from separate political parties for allegedly making communal statements, officials said on Sunday.
According to police, notices were served to Gautam Buddha Debbarma, block president of Tipra Motha from Charilam in Sepahijala district, and Gouranga Rudra Pal, a leader of Amra Bangali. Both have been directed to appear before the West Agartala Police Station by Tuesday.
“We have initiated an investigation into the incidents of communal speeches. The leaders have been asked to present themselves before the police station for questioning,” said Rana Chatterjee, Officer-in-Charge of West Agartala Police Station.
Debbarma had recently made controversial remarks in a Facebook post, stating that “Bengalis will have to flee from Bishramganj because it is not 1980, it is 2025,” while warning of mobilising people with weapons. The video of his post went viral on Saturday, prompting police to lodge a suo motu FIR against him on Sunday night.
In a separate incident, Amra Bangali leader Gouranga Rudra Pal had delivered a provocative speech during a rally in Agartala on August 30, claiming that Bengalis in Tripura are the “sons of the soil” and not outsiders. Police said a case has also been registered against him in connection with the speech.
Authorities confirmed that further action will be taken based on the ongoing investigation. FD JK
