Tripura Police Seize Illegal Foreign Cigarettes Worth Rs 6 Lakh in North Tripura

Agartala, July 5 (FD) In a major crackdown on the illegal tobacco trade, Tripura Police seized approximately 39,200 sticks of foreign cigarettes, valued at around Rs 6 lakh, during a special vehicle checking operation at the Laljuri Check Post in North Tripura on Saturday.

The seizure was made following specific intelligence inputs received by the Laljuri Out Post. Acting swiftly, a police team led by the Officer-in-Charge conducted a special vehicle inspection drive at the check post.

During the operation, police intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number TR-02N-0726 and carried out a detailed search. The search led to the recovery of 196 bundles of foreign cigarettes, comprising around 39,200 sticks, which had been concealed inside the vehicle.

According to police officials, the estimated black-market value of the seized contraband is approximately Rs 6 lakh.

The vehicle, along with the illegal cigarettes, was seized under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and legal proceedings have been initiated.

Police officials said the operation was based on credible intelligence and reflects the department's sustained efforts to curb the smuggling and illegal trade of contraband goods across the state.

An investigation is currently underway to identify the source of the consignment, trace the individuals involved in the smuggling network, and determine the intended destination of the seized foreign cigarettes. Officials indicated that further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation. FD JK
