Tripura Observes World Indigenous Day 2026, Highlights Tribal Role in Forest Conservation

Agartala, Aug 9 (FD) World Indigenous Day 2026 was observed in Tripura with a special programme at Sukanta Academy, highlighting the close relationship between indigenous communities and the state’s forest resources. This year’s theme was “Indigenous Communities – Guardians of Tripura’s Forest Ecosystem.”

The programme was jointly organised by the Forest Department’s IGDC CRIFLAT Project, SCATFORM Project and ELEMENT Project. Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma inaugurated the event and emphasised the need to respect and recognise the contributions of Tripura’s indigenous communities in every sphere of society.

Speaking at the programme, Debbarma said indigenous communities have traditionally played an important role in protecting forest resources. He highlighted the strong relationship between indigenous people and forests and noted their contribution to the conservation and sustainable management of forest ecosystems.

The minister also highlighted Tripura’s rich indigenous heritage, traditional customs and cultural practices, stressing the importance of preserving these traditions for future generations.

Forest Department PCCF R.K. Samal spoke about the significance of World Indigenous Day and highlighted the diverse cultural heritage of Tripura’s 19 tribal communities. The programme also recognised nine distinguished personalities for their notable contributions to literature, culture and social service.

SCATFORM Project CEO Bhanumati G, State Government Secretary K. Shashi Kumar, and noted poet and writer Bikash Roy Debbarma, among others, attended the event.

Representatives of various self-help groups displayed traditional indigenous handicrafts, showcasing the artistic skills and cultural heritage of tribal communities. The programme also featured a colourful cultural presentation by indigenous artists, adding to the significance of the World Indigenous Day celebration. FD SB
