Agartala, Aug 25 (FD) Tripura Medical College and Dr. BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital marked their 21st Foundation Day with a programme at the Vivekananda Auditorium in Hapania, Agartala, where Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha highlighted the institution’s growing contribution to healthcare delivery and medical education in the state.
Addressing faculty members and students, Chief Minister Manik Saha said Tripura Medical College has emerged as an important component of the state’s healthcare infrastructure and is steadily moving towards providing services at par with Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital, the state’s main referral hospital.
The Chief Minister said he was pleased to see the hospital’s performance across various medical services, including OPD facilities, major and minor surgeries, dialysis, endoscopy and colonoscopy. He recalled that the medical college began its journey in 2005 and has since developed into one of Tripura’s reliable healthcare institutions.
According to figures shared during the programme, nearly 3.65 lakh people received healthcare services at Tripura Medical College between August 2025 and July 2026. During the same period, doctors conducted 4,831 major surgeries and 18,292 minor surgeries. The hospital also recorded 2,536 dialysis procedures and 122 colonoscopy cases.
Saha said the college currently offers 150 MBBS seats and 18 postgraduate seats, with plans for further expansion. He noted that the state government has accorded priority to the health sector and has taken several initiatives to strengthen medical infrastructure and improve patient services.
The Chief Minister pointed to the expansion of beds at GBP Hospital, separate facilities for mother and child care, evening OPD services at major and district hospitals and the recently operational Civil Hospital at Jackson Gate in Agartala.
He also highlighted new healthcare projects, including private initiatives at Srija Hospital and a proposed medical college at Ambassa by Bandhan Group, along with a tertiary eye hospital near ILS Hospital. According to him, these developments indicate that Tripura is steadily progressing towards becoming a medical hub.
During the programme, Saha inaugurated a blood donation camp and a nature-cum-smart lecture hall at the college’s academic building. He also unveiled the college magazine, The Wings-2026, and presented a trophy to the winning team of the inter-college football tournament.
The Chief Minister said the state has also witnessed progress in medical education, with pass-outs from both medical colleges serving within Tripura and outside the state. He noted that Agartala Government Medical College secured 131st position in the all-India ranking of medical colleges this year, while the state’s referral patient rate has declined significantly.
He further urged doctors to make greater use of artificial intelligence, telemedicine and digital systems to improve treatment and healthcare delivery. Saha called for collective efforts to further strengthen medical education and healthcare services at Tripura Medical College and Dr. BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital.
The event was attended by Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, Society for Tripura Medical College chairman Dr. Pramathesh Roy, CEO Dr. Swapan Saha, Principal Prof. Dr. Arindam Datta, Prof. Dr. A.K. Chakma and Superintendent Dr. Jayanta Poddar, among others. FD SB
