Agartala, May 27 (FD) A major initiative aimed at transforming Tripura’s horticulture sector and strengthening the rural economy was formally launched on Wednesday with the introduction of “Mission Queen Pineapple, Tripura,” a three-year project worth ₹236 crore under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Government of India.
The virtual launch programme was held at Sanchar Bhawan in New Delhi in the presence of Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, and Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath. The ambitious mission has been designed to strengthen the cultivation, processing, branding, and export potential of Tripura’s globally recognized GI-tagged Queen Pineapple.
Speaking during the launch, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia described the initiative as a landmark step for the agricultural future of Tripura. He stated that the project would help transform the state’s famous Queen Pineapple into an internationally recognized brand while simultaneously creating stronger opportunities for rural economic development.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha emphasized that the multi-dimensional project would focus on improving processing infrastructure, building stronger market linkages, and reducing production gaps to increase export opportunities. He said the mission would play a crucial role in improving the income of farmers and accelerating rural economic growth across the state.
Dr. Saha also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his continued support toward the Northeastern region through the Act East Policy. According to the Chief Minister, the policy has opened new pathways of development, trade, and economic opportunities for the region.
Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath termed the initiative historic and highlighted that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Pineapple Cultivation and Value Chain Development covering FY 2026 to FY 2028 aims to unlock the premium potential of Tripura Queen Pineapple. He stated that the government is giving equal importance to cultivation, processing, marketing, and branding to ensure better financial returns for pineapple growers.
The mission is expected to strengthen the entire pineapple value chain in Tripura through the development of processing facilities, improved storage and transportation systems, export expansion, and employment generation for farmers and rural entrepreneurs. Officials believe the initiative will significantly enhance Tripura’s agricultural branding at both national and international levels.
Tripura’s Queen Pineapple, widely appreciated for its sweetness, aroma, and superior quality, received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2018. Since then, it has emerged as one of the state’s most valuable agricultural products and an important symbol of Tripura’s growing horticulture sector. FD SB
