Agartala, Dec 20: Taking a jibe at the leader of the opposition in the Tripura Assembly Manik Sarkar, state Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) Minister Sushanta Chowdhury Tuesday said the former was giving a slur to a constitutional by saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow the Election Commission of India (ECI) to function “impartially” in Tripura, where election is due early next year.
“Election Commission is a constitutional and independent body no government, Prime Minister or Chief Minister can influence the Election Commission. Sarkar’s comments are the reflections of utter frustration. After the mammoth rally addressed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the CPI-M was sensing defeat in the next elections, because people have rejected them”, he told reporters.
Sarkar in a rally organized by All India Democratic Women’s Association here said that the Election Commission was not working impartially here and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi should allow ECI to function impartially here.
He further alleged that the Commission was inactive under the BJP rule in Tripura and level playing ground should be created for free and fare elections.
Sarkar also alleged that the people of the state were fed up with the performance of the BJP government because people’s basic needs were not fulfilled as the common people were not getting jobs or proper wages.
He further cautioned that if the supporters and workers think that Prime Minister’s rally was enough to bring back the ruling party in power they would commit a mistake.
A coalition of BJP-IPFT ended the 25-years Marxists rule in Tripura and the saffron party won 35 seats, while its partner IPFT secured 8 seats in the sixty-member assembly elections held in 2018. FD JK
