Agartala, June 19 (FD) Tripura has recorded a significant rise in fish production, with annual output crossing 94,000 metric tonnes (MT), Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das said on Friday after chairing a state-level review meeting of the Fisheries Department.
The meeting reviewed the department's performance during the previous financial year and assessed the utilisation of funds under various state and centrally sponsored schemes. Discussions also focused on priorities and targets for the 2026-27 financial year.
Addressing officials, Das said the department plans to hold at least two review meetings every year to monitor progress, evaluate achievements and address challenges in the fisheries sector.
“We need proper assessments to identify loopholes, evaluate how far we have been able to meet the state's fish demand and discuss any remaining gaps”, the minister said.
He informed that district-level review meetings will commence from next month to examine the implementation of fisheries schemes on the ground and identify areas requiring further intervention.
Highlighting the sector's steady growth, Das said fish production in Tripura has increased consistently over the past few years. The state's output, which was around 85,000 MT earlier, rose to 89,000 MT and has now surpassed the 94,000 MT mark.
According to the minister, the growth has been driven by several initiatives undertaken under state and central government schemes. These include the creation of new fish ponds, renovation of abandoned water bodies, and promotion of scientific fish farming practices and strengthening of aquaculture infrastructure.
Das expressed confidence that the Fisheries Department would continue building on its achievements while addressing existing shortcomings to further boost production and enhance self-sufficiency in fish supply.
The state government has been focusing on expanding fisheries infrastructure and extending support to fish farmers as part of its broader strategy to increase production, create employment opportunities and reduce dependence on fish imports from other states. FD JK
