Agartala, Sept 24 (FD) Tripura is exploring the possibility of using unused tea cultivation land for industrial and tourism projects as the state seeks to address a shortage of suitable land for new investments, Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Thursday.
The state has around 12,832 hectares of land allotted for tea cultivation, of which only about 6,000 hectares is currently under cultivation, according to officials. The government has decided to examine whether the remaining unused land can be made available for other development purposes.
Addressing an event in West Tripura district, Saha said the availability of suitable land had emerged as a major constraint for entrepreneurs seeking to invest in the state.
He said the state Cabinet had approved a proposal to utilise unused tea land for industrial and tourism-related projects.
The move comes after the business conclave organised in Tripura in July, which, according to the Chief Minister, attracted more than 1,200 delegates from outside the state. Several investors who attended the conclave have subsequently approached the government seeking land for proposed projects.
Saha said the proposals received by the government include tourism projects, medical colleges and super-speciality hospitals.
Alongside efforts to make more land available for investment, the government is also working to expand specialised medical education in the state.
Saha said discussions were underway to introduce super-speciality courses at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital.
He further said the National Medical Commission had recently approved 100 additional MBBS seats for AGMC and GBP Hospital, taking the combined intake to 250 seats.
The state government plans to use the expanded medical education infrastructure as a foundation for introducing super-speciality courses, he added. FD JK
