Agartala, April 28 (FD) The state government has extended the closure of all schools till May 1. The decision comes as temperatures continue to soar, posing serious health risks to students and staff.
Earlier, schools—government, government-aided, and privately managed—were ordered shut from April 23 to April 28 due to extreme weather conditions. With no signs of relief, authorities have now extended the holiday for three more days.
“As the heatwave continues, it has been decided that all schools will remain shut from April 29 to May 1. All District Education Officers (DEOs) have been directed to inform schools under their jurisdiction,” said NC Sharma, Additional Secretary, Education (School).
The Education Department, in its latest memo, confirmed the extended closure applies to all schools under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) as well.
According to the Meteorological Department, the state recorded a maximum temperature of 37°C on Sunday, with Monday expected to reach 39°C—one of the highest in recent times. The average temperature is predicted to remain between 37°C and 38°C over the next few days, with possible relief from rain and thundershowers on May 2 and 3.
The government has urged parents to ensure children remain indoors, stay hydrated, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses. While the move may impact the academic calendar, officials stress that student health and safety are the top priority. FD JK
