Agartala, May 19 (FD) The business organizations in Tripura on Monday welcomed the decision of the central government to impose port restrictions on certain goods from neighbouring Bangladesh and said that the national interests should come first.
Nitai Saha, president of Tripura Export-Import chamber of commerce said, “It is a welcome approach by the Government of India, which imposed restrictions on six items including garment items, plastic products, electrical goods and some food items as against some restrictions by the Bangladesh Governments.
“We had a meeting with the customs officials here and we all have welcomed the move. They are now trying to tie-up with our foe like Pakistan, when they were making business with India. We think it is a concerted effort by our Government”, Saha told this correspondent.
The Bangladeshi exporters, who exports substantial items through the land ports will be loser in view of the moves initiated by the Government, said the Secretary of the Chamber of Trade and Business (TCTB), Rajat Paul.
However, the Director General of the Foreign Trade imposed restrictions on certain items transmitting through India towards Nepal and Bhutan.
They had seup 28 cement manufacturing industries in neighbouring Cumilla and Brahmanbaria and were importing to this state and they would now face the losses, he added.
Tripura imported goods worth Rs. 636.72 crore from Bangladesh in the last fiscal when the state’s export was only 121.37 crore, which is an instance of trade imbalance.
Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh in three sides having 856 km long border with the neighbouring country, which has five operational land ports. FD JK
