Tripura: Eight held for killing woman on suspicion of being a witch

Agartala, Apr 8 (FD) Tripura police arrested eight persons on the charge of kidnapping and killing a 45-year-old woman suspecting her to be a 'witch'. on Thursday night.
According to sources, the incident took place at Lengtibari under Champahour police station in Khowai district on Thursday late evening.
The accused persons identified as Charitra Kanda (40), Mithun Kanda (18), Akash Kanda (18), Kajal Kanda (65), Sanjit Kanda (20), Bimal Kanda (19), Ajit Kanda (25) and Chandan Tanti (35) were sent to police custody for three days.
The deceased- Kaushalya Ghatual (45) along with her husband Ranjan Kanda (51) were on their way to the weekly market when they were attacked by a group of people and kidnapped the woman.
As soon as the incident was reported to the Behalabari police outpost, the local police initiated a probe.
“Based on the information police started a search operation for the woman but were unable to find her. Later in the evening the police detained some youths of the village and during preliminary interrogation the youths have revealed that they have killed the woman and dumped the body in an abandoned toilet pit,” source in the police said.
The victim was allegedly killed on suspicion of being a witch and allegedly practicing witchcraft, the source added.
Police recovered the dead body and brought it to the mortuary of the district hospital.
They murder accused were produced before a local court and they were sent to police remand for three days. FD PD
