Agartala, Jan 16 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha today said that despite numerous challenges, the Agartala Government Dental College has been established in the state and the number of seats in this college has increased from 50 to 63.
A new building will be constructed at IGM Hospital, with ₹202 crore already allocated for the project by the Ministry of DoNER. Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha made these remarks today while inaugurating the 23rd Annual Dental Conference of the Indian Dental Association, Tripura Chapter, organized by the National Oral Health Program and the National Health Mission, Tripura, at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala. A two-day training program for dental surgeons has also been arranged as part of the event.
In his speech, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha stated that people place great trust in doctors. Doctors are remembered for fulfilling their responsibilities diligently, and hence, dental surgeons must work sincerely to provide quality healthcare. The government is committed to delivering advanced healthcare services to remote areas. He cited Dr. Rafiuddin Ahmed, the father of modern dentistry in India, as an exemplary figure demonstrating how one can become a legend. Dr. Ahmed’s birthday, December 24, is celebrated as National Dentist Day.
Highlighting Dr. Ahmed’s professional journey, the Chief Minister stressed the need for increased public awareness about oral hygiene, as negligence and lack of awareness often lead to severe dental issues. He also emphasized enhancing the skills of dental professionals. Mentioning the implementation of teleconsultation services through e-Sanjeevani to benefit dental patients, he spoke about significant improvements in the state's connectivity infrastructure.
The event began with the Chief Minister paying tribute to Dr. Rafiuddin Ahmed's portrait. A moment of silence was observed in memory of two eminent dental surgeons from the state who passed away in 2024. Dr. Utpal Chanda was honored for his notable contributions to dentistry.
Health and Family Welfare Department Secretary Kiran Gitte noted that dental diseases often result from a lack of awareness. The state government prioritizes making dental care accessible to all. He expressed hope that training programs for dental surgeons would significantly enhance dental healthcare services in the state. Other dignitaries, including National Health Mission Director Dr. Samit Roy Chowdhury, Health Director Professor (Dr.) Sanjeev Kumar Debbarma, Family Welfare and Disease Prevention Director Dr. Anjan Das, Health Education Director Dr. H.P. Sharma, Agartala Government Dental College Principal Dr. Shalu Roy, and Deputy Director of the Dental Department Dr. Rajesh Anil Acharya, attended the event. The chairperson of the 23rd Annual Dental Conference, Dr. Samir Ranjan Dutta Chowdhury, was also present. Dr. S.M. Ali, President of the Indian Dental Association, Tripura Chapter, delivered the welcome address.
During the program, the Chief Minister unveiled a commemorative souvenir. Additionally, an informative documentary highlighting significant initiatives in dental care was screened. Educational stalls exhibited at the venue were also visited by the Chief Minister and other dignitaries. FD JK
