Agartala, Sept 10 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Tuesday announced that the state government has declared Sangrama Puja the worship of the guardian deity of the Reang community as a restricted holiday.
Speaking at an interaction with Samajpatis (traditional community heads), Dr. Saha said the present government has taken several initiatives for the socio-economic development of Janjati communities. “The insightful suggestions and profound knowledge of our tribal brothers and sisters strengthen my resolve to work with greater confidence for the upliftment of the poorest of the poor,” he stated.
For the first time, Samajpatis from all communities attended the extended gathering. Dr. Saha emphasized that unity and brotherhood are essential for Tripura’s progress. “We must develop brotherhood through work, based on trust and faith. Only then will our relationships grow stronger,” he said.
The Chief Minister highlighted the government’s decision to extend honorariums to all Samajpatis. “Earlier, only 10 communities received Rs. 2,000. After reviewing, we decided to include all 19 communities and increased the amount to Rs. 5,000. This is a mark of respect,” Dr. Saha noted, adding that he had directed officials to ensure timely payments.
He further stressed the importance of preserving endangered sub-tribes. “Some groups are on the path of extinction. We don’t want to lose anyone. That’s why honorariums have been extended, and officers have been appointed at district and sub-divisional levels to monitor implementation of welfare schemes,” he explained.
Dr. Saha also confirmed that the Cabinet had approved Sangrama Puja as a restricted holiday. “We don’t take decisions without the Government of India’s direction. My government works in line with the Centre’s guidance, even regarding customary law,” he said.
Reflecting on the government’s broader efforts, Dr. Saha pointed out that the Bru issue was neglected by previous governments but resolved under the BJP-led administration. “When I took charge as Chief Minister, I expedited their repatriation process. There will be challenges, but we must work together to solve them,” he concluded. FD JK
