Agartala, May 20 (FD) National Crime Records Bureau data has revealed a notable decline in overall crime in Tripura during 2024, with significant reductions recorded in kidnapping, crimes against women, and offences against Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).
According to the latest NCRB report, the state registered a total of 4,033 cases under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Special and Local Laws (SLL) in 2024, compared to 5,002 cases in 2023 and 4,532 cases in 2022.
At the national level, India recorded 58.85 lakh cognisable crimes in 2024, including 35.44 lakh IPC/BNS offences and 23.41 lakh cases under Special and Local Laws, reflecting an overall decline of around six per cent from the previous year.
Tripura also reported an improved charge-sheeting rate of 79.7 per cent in 2024, indicating enhanced investigation and prosecution efficiency by law enforcement agencies.
Among major categories, kidnapping and abduction cases witnessed a sharp decline. The state recorded 105 such cases in 2022 and 132 in 2023, but the number dropped substantially to 50 in 2024.
Crimes against women also showed a downward trend, decreasing from 752 cases in 2022 to 716 cases in 2024. Similarly, crimes against senior citizens reduced from 12 cases in 2022 to only five in 2024.
The report further highlighted that atrocity cases against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, which stood at two in 2022, fell to zero in both 2023 and 2024.
Economic offences remained relatively stable over the three-year period. The state recorded 242 such cases in 2022, which declined to 198 in 2023 before marginally rising to 201 in 2024.
However, murder cases showed fluctuations. Tripura recorded 109 murder cases in 2022, which dipped to 101 in 2023 before increasing to 116 in 2024.
Cybercrime figures remained largely steady, with 30 cases reported in 2020, 36 in 2022, and 33 in 2023. Offences against the state declined from 30 cases in 2022 to 16 in 2023, before slightly increasing to 22 in 2024.
The NCRB data also noted that only one crime against a foreign national was reported in Tripura during the review period, which occurred in 2023.
Overall, the figures indicate an improvement in the state’s law and order situation, despite fluctuations in certain serious offences such as murder. FD JK
