Agartala, May 17 (FD) Tripura Police have suspended a constable posted at Salema Police Station in Dhalai district after a video allegedly showing his wife displaying a large amount of cash went viral on social media, prompting an official investigation and multiple detentions.
Police sources said six persons, including two police personnel, have been detained in connection with the incident. The case surfaced after a mobile phone video purportedly showing bundles of Indian currency being displayed by the constable’s wife spread widely online, drawing sharp public attention and raising questions over the source of the money.
According to senior police officials, departmental action was initiated immediately after the clip went viral. “We have detained six persons, including two police personnel, for their alleged involvement in the cash-display case,” a senior police official told reporters.
The detained persons have been identified as Constable Pijush Debbarma, his wife Nandu Rani Debbarma, Ajit Debbarma (48), Menaka Debbarma (45), Rajesree Debbarma (38), and Sanjana Debbarma (34).
Police said the video allegedly showed a “huge amount of Indian currency,” leading investigators to register a formal case and begin an inquiry into the origin of the cash, possible financial irregularities, and the circumstances under which the footage was recorded and circulated online.
Inspector General (Law and Order) Ipper Manchak Dnyonba confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway. Speaking to reporters after a meeting with senior police officers on Saturday, he said, “A case has been registered and a probe has begun.”
Officials are examining whether the cash displayed in the video was linked to any illegal activities and whether other individuals may have been involved. Investigators are also expected to verify the authenticity of the footage and determine if any criminal conspiracy or misconduct was involved. FD JK
