Agartala, Sept 25 (FD) The Tripura Pradesh Congress on Friday intensified its campaign against the Election Commission, staging a demonstration near the Chief Electoral Officer’s office in Agartala and announcing plans to launch a broader movement over alleged irregularities in the electoral process.
The protest was organised in the Office Lane area, where Congress workers and supporters assembled and raised slogans against the Election Commission. An effigy of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was also burnt during the demonstration.
Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, Pradesh Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha and other senior party leaders participated in the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Roy Barman demanded the resignation and arrest of Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that recent actions of the Election Commission had raised serious concerns about the functioning of democratic institutions and the integrity of the electoral process.
The Congress leader also alleged irregularities in elections held in several states, including West Bengal, Bihar, Maharashtra and Haryana. He questioned the legal provisions governing protection available to Election Commission officials against certain forms of legal action.
Roy Barman further criticised the BJP-led government, alleging that issues affecting teachers, educated unemployed youths, government employees, workers and farmers were not receiving adequate attention.
He said the Congress would continue to raise public concerns and strengthen its organisational activities to reach out to people and seek electoral support.
The party indicated that Friday’s demonstration was part of a broader campaign against the Election Commission, with further programmes planned to highlight its concerns over the electoral process and the functioning of democratic institutions. FD JK
