Agartala, Aug 28 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday said the state government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards the drug trade and will take stern action against any police personnel found involved in narcotics-related activities.
Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, informed the assembly that the conviction rate in cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act had reached 14.7 per cent till July 2026.
The Chief Minister made the remarks while responding to a question raised by Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy regarding the alleged involvement of police personnel in the drug trade.
Roy expressed concern over the growing drug menace, saying it was destroying the future of the younger generation. He questioned how the government could effectively act against drug kingpins if members of the police force themselves were allegedly involved in narcotics-related activities.
The Congress MLA sought details on the number of police personnel detained, arrested or chargesheeted in connection with the drug trade, as well as the number of FIRs registered against them.
Responding to the issue, Saha said the government was working in coordination with multiple agencies, including the police and the Border Security Force (BSF), to curb drug trafficking and consumption.
“We don’t tolerate it,” the Chief Minister said, adding that the government was conducting awareness programmes and taking action against those involved in drug-related offences.
Saha also said that synthetic drugs were entering Tripura from outside the state and claimed that persons from states such as Uttar Pradesh and Delhi had been arrested in connection with drug trafficking cases.
The government, he said, was also focusing on improving the conviction rate in NDPS cases. Public prosecutors and assistant public prosecutors were holding regular meetings with police officials to ensure proper investigation and effective prosecution.
Saha said authorities had been instructed to take action against drug consumers and small-time peddlers, including underage offenders, while stressing the need to dismantle the larger drug trafficking network.
On allegations of police involvement in the drug trade, the Chief Minister said action had already been taken against personnel found to be involved.
“We will take stern action if police personnel are engaged in such cases. There will be no compromise,” Saha said. FD JK
