Agartala, Aug 23 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Sunday visited several flood-affected areas in West Tripura and inspected relief arrangements as heavy rainfall intensified the flood situation across the state. He visited the Ashram Chowmuhani area and the Vivekananda School relief camp at Bardowali, where he interacted with affected residents and assured them of necessary administrative assistance.
During the visit, Dr. Saha said the state government was considering permanent measures to address recurring flood problems in Tripura. He said the administration remained on high alert and officials from the district level to the state government were working round the clock to deal with the situation.
According to the Chief Minister, sudden waterlogging and flooding were reported in parts of Khowai and West Tripura following heavy rainfall, particularly in the Barmura Hills. He noted that a similar situation had occurred in August 2024. The Howrah River had crossed its danger threshold, although water levels were showing signs of decline as rainfall temporarily eased.
Dr. Saha said relief camps had been opened in affected areas, with arrangements made for food, including baby food. Disaster response teams had been deployed, while boats were also kept ready for rescue and evacuation operations. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were kept in reserve as a precautionary measure.
The State Emergency Operation Centre’s situation report issued at 7 PM stated that 17 relief camps were sheltering 410 families comprising 1,352 people. A total of 115 houses had been damaged across the state, including one completely damaged, one severely damaged and 113 partially damaged houses. No deaths or injuries had been reported.
West Tripura and Khowai remained among the worst-affected districts. Seven relief camps in Jirania were sheltering 120 families, while five camps in Sadar accommodated 87 families. In Khowai district, relief camps in Teliamura and Khowai subdivision were sheltering hundreds of affected residents.
River levels remained a major concern. The Howrah River at Jahar Bridge was recorded at 11.16 metres, above its critical level of 10.727 metres and close to the danger level of 11.227 metres. The Khowai River at Khowai also reached its expected flood level, while the Bijoy River at Laxmibill crossed its expected flood level.
Heavy rainfall was recorded at several locations, with Lembucherra receiving 218 mm, Budhjungnagar 177 mm and Agartala Airport 153 mm. More rain and thunderstorms are forecast in several districts over the next 24 hours.
Dr. Saha said the government was closely monitoring the situation and working to ensure the safety and welfare of affected residents. Secretary Milind Ramteke, West District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar and other officials accompanied the Chief Minister during the visit. FD SB
