Agartala, July 4 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Saturday urged the medical fraternity to uphold the ideals of legendary physician Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, stressing that dedication, integrity and ethical medical practice are the cornerstones of building a healthy society and a developed state.
Addressing the National Doctors' Day celebration organised by the Health and Family Welfare Department at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala, the Chief Minister said that the contributions of Dr. B.C. Roy continue to inspire generations of doctors across the country. He noted that work carried out with sincerity and commitment remains alive for years and motivates others to serve society.
Recalling that he was unable to attend the official Doctors' Day programme on July 1 due to engagements outside the state, Dr. Saha said he was pleased to join the medical community at the commemorative event. He praised doctors across Tripura for their relentless efforts in providing quality healthcare and highlighted the remarkable transformation witnessed in the state's health infrastructure during the tenure of the present government.
"The government is committed to providing every possible support and facility to doctors serving in the state. Modern infrastructure, advanced medical equipment and the tireless efforts of doctors and healthcare workers are laying the foundation of a strong public health system, which is a significant milestone in building a developed Tripura," he said.
The Chief Minister also reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring transparency in the healthcare sector. Referring to the recent implementation of the ban on private practice by doctors serving at GBP Hospital and Agartala Government Medical College, he clarified that the decision was taken only after extensive consultations with doctors' associations and considering their suggestions.
Dr. Saha emphasised the need to expand teleconsultation services to reduce treatment costs and ensure better access to specialist care, particularly for patients residing in remote areas. He said the government's objective is to strengthen healthcare infrastructure not only in Agartala but also across district and sub-divisional hospitals.
Highlighting the state's healthcare achievements, the Chief Minister said the number of referral patients has declined significantly due to improved medical facilities within Tripura. He further announced that the government is preparing initiatives to introduce liver and heart transplant facilities in the state in the coming years. He also lauded the successful implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, which has benefited thousands of residents.
Describing Dr. B.C. Roy as both an eminent physician and an accomplished administrator, Dr. Saha said his life and ideals should serve as a guiding force for every medical professional. He urged doctors to perform their duties with accountability, compassion and honesty, adding that public trust can only be earned through dedicated service.
Health and Family Welfare Secretary Kiran Gitte highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the state government to strengthen healthcare delivery. Director of Family Welfare and Preventive Medicine Dr. Anjan Das, Principal of Agartala Government Medical College Dr. Tapan Majumdar, Principal of TMC and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Teaching Hospital Prof. Dr. Arindam Dutta, and Principal of Agartala Government Dental College Dr. Shalu Roy were among those present.
The programme also honoured retiring doctors for their lifelong service, while seven physicians were felicitated for their outstanding contributions to different fields of healthcare. Director of Health Services Dr. Debasree Debbarma delivered the vote of thanks.
