Agartala, Nov 10 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha urged the leaders of the displaced Brus from neighbouring Mizoram, who were sheltered in evacuee camps in North Tripura district to shift to the designated resettlement village built for them to get the government benefits.
About 37000 Brus had migrated to Tripura following ethnic clashes with the local Mizos in Mamit and Kolasib districts since 1997 and were sheltered in seven camps in North Tripura district.
The central government, the state governments of Tripura and Mizoram and Bru leaders signed a quadripartite agreement on January 16, 2020 chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi and announced a package for their resettlement in designated villages in Tripura.
Chief Minister Saha and his Deputy Jishnu Dev Varma reviewed the progress at a special review meeting on the progress of Bru resettlement on Wednesday where the CM urged the Bru leaders to shift to the 12 designated resettlement villages to get all the benefits of the agreement.
With the draft electoral roll published in the state on Wednesday for the assembly elections slated to be held in February next year the Tripura Election department has also appealed to Bru refugees staying in relief camps in the state to go to resettlement villages and get their names enrolled in the electoral rolls during the special revision of voters’ list, an official said on Thursday.
“Many Bru people have already settled in their new designated villages and 7,165 Bru names have already been enrolled in Tripura, the Election department targets to enrol as many as 20,000 Bru voters of around 6,300 families and the remaining are expected to get registered in the state’s electoral rolls during the special summary revision”, Additional Chief Electoral Officer, Subhasish Bandhopadyay told reporters.
Meanwhile, the state government has discarded the proposal for setting up resettlement villages for Brus only in Kanchanpur sub-division and their resettlement villages were built throughout the state.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Kanchanpur said, “All Brus sheltered in camps in Kanchanpur of North Tripura district shall move to new designated villages by November 30 or else their ration will be stopped from December 1”.
