Agartala, May 9 (FD) The 154th birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore was celebrated with great enthusiasm and reverence in Tripura on Friday. Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Deepak Majumder referring to the poet as a “bright star in Indian literature and culture.”
Speaking at the Prabhatī Kabi-Pranām ceremony at Rabindra Kanan, organized by the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA), Mayor Majumder remarked, “It is impossible to imagine literature and culture without mentioning Rabindranath. He is an emotion for all of us and shared a deep bond with Tripura.” He encouraged more discussions and studies on Tagore’s works to enrich future generations.
The ceremony began with a floral tribute at Tagore’s statue and featured performances of Rabindra Sangeet, dance, and poetry recitations by artists from various cultural organizations. The event was attended by MLA Mina Rani Sarkar, ICA Special Secretary Debapriya Bardhan, ICA Director Bimbisar Bhattacharya, and other dignitaries.
Bardhan praised Tagore as a multi-talented genius, stating, “His works reflect joy and sorrow, love and separation. His thoughts and philosophies remain relevant even today.”
Tagore, born in Kolkata in 1861 (25th Boishakh, 1268 Bengali calendar), was a poet, philosopher, musician, and artist whose works reshaped Bengali literature and culture. He became the first Asian Nobel Laureate in 1913 for his literary contributions. Known fondly as ‘Gurudev,’ he was also the founder of Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, West Bengal.
In Tripura, his legacy is deeply interwoven with the royal regime of the past. Along with the state-organized events, non-governmental organizations also held cultural programs, including a special ceremony at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan. A week-long celebration has also been launched to mark the occasion.
The ICA department has scheduled a three-day cultural program at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan, featuring Tagore’s music, drama, and poetry, as part of Rabindra Jayanti, celebrated annually on 25th Boishakh. FD SB
